What has been going on in my life:

- I have been sick so frequently this winter (especially lately) that one of my friends commented that I must be pregnant. I'm not. Though it seems that it's definitely in the air because pregnant people are EVERYWHERE!

- Turns out that I would bet money my boss is who gets me sick all the time. We always end up sick within 24 hours of each other with the exact same symptoms. He has kids. People with kids seem to get every bug that ever goes around because their kids get them from school.

- All that pretty snow we got? Gone! Now we have a swampy gross disgusting mess, a leaky basement and a ton of mud. Yay.

- I'm done with winter, I'm ready for sun dresses and sandals.

- My In-Laws just bought a house on Padre Island, TX. Greatest thing ever, now every time we visit it's like a vacation. Christmas at their house every year! ;-) (not really because my mom would cry)

- My job is stressful. I wish I could telecommute at least part time. That's not new, but to add to all the reasons that were there before- I think I'd be happier if I had the ability to add social opportunities into my day once in awhile. By social opportunities I mean talking to at least one person in a cordial manner. Yes, I do see the irony in needing to not be in the office to do that.

- Yesterday at this time we were under a Winter Storm Watch. Now, we are under a High Sun Watch that warns us to wear sunglasses. I find that extraordinarily funny.

7 Quick Takes Friday, Vol. 11

1. I feel I should apologize for neglecting this site. We were slammed by tons and tons of snow and then the house was hit with the stomach flu. Topped off by an uber busy week at work.

2. I'm starting to realize that I think I underestimated how wonderful my old boring job was. Yes, I could do it with my eyes closed and one arm tied behind my back, and yes an accurate statement would be that a trained monkey could do that job however I had zero stress. I would go home and not think about my job until the next day, it was almost always solely 40 hours a week. Very little responsibility for anything fell on me and I had plenty of time to do all the other things I'm far more interested in then work. None of the above are true with my job now.

3. This past week has also led to the conclusion that I need to come up with a new schedule. As someone who is not keen on spending hours upon hours in my office building, I need to concentrate this weekend on getting our home office usable so I can work as much as I need to at nights and on the weekends. My current method of working on the coffee table is just not working, too many distractions, plus it's not a comfortable way to sit and work for long periods of time.

4. I think we are finally getting Iphones/Blackberries this weekend! Woot! We keep going back and forth on what we/each are going to get. The benefits are laid out as follows:
Iphone- more user friendly, easier setup
Blackberry- easier to type, more business minded

I have also been looking up all the apps to see what will help me most with my spreadsheet and list obsessions. Anything that takes all those scraps of paper out of folders, purses, etc would be superb.

5. I think I'm going to buy a mail and key holder. For one, I keep losing my keys and two I hate cluttered surfaces and our current mail system of throwing everything on top of a bookcase is driving me nuts. In looking up possible holders, I also found a pretty good looking indoor/outdoor rug that apparently is surprisingly plush but can still be hosed off if need be that may work really well for our basement. Anyone have any mail/key organizers that work well in their houses?

6. Does anyone else live in a house with someone who plays a lot of war themed video games? Is it just me or after awhile does it make you feel like you live in a war zone?

7. I am considering starting a fashion blog for normal people including a daily outfit. You know, people who don't wear mini skirts or mismatched layers of "thrift store" clothes, who have real jobs and budgets so they can't afford to pay $500 for a pair of shoes. Do you think there's any interest in that? If they already exist please point me in that direction since I haven't been able to find any. Or maybe I'll just integrate it in with this blog one or two days a week.

Regular posting will resume next week.

More quick takes here.

Snow.... what?!?!

After years of snow drought, our area seems to have a bullseye painted on and is under seige. We got 18 inches final total in December, the last Saturday in Jan we got about 6-8, and this past Friday and Saturday? Final total= 22. Keep in mind with these numbers that we are at a low elevation, very close to the river and generally trend warm. Those further inland got well over 2 feet.

Oh, did I mention we are under a winter storm watch for Tuesday night/Wed? AND there's more storms setting up, so we'll just have to see what happens with those. I think it's going to take until July to get the DC Area fully dug out.

Here's some pictures for you:

Our deck table and chairs. This picture was taken early Saturday afternoon- keep in mind, it was still snowing. Hard.

Took a walk up to the 7-11 and to survey the damage so far on Saturday morning at about 9:30. The trees behind me? Not supposed to be hanging to the ground, obviously. They had not yet broken but all that wet snow is heavy!

View of our street. After this was taken we got another 6 inches or so. Yes, a snow plow had been through- couldn't tell? Yeah....

Another view. We were dropping off our shovel at a friend's house who lives nearby. The dragging shovel was handy- gave me a path to walk in that wasn't up to my knees.

Bill does not like snow. He says it comes from a childhood living in Upstate New York and seeing all of the problems snow can cause. I just say he's a grump ;-)

View of the snow piled up on our deck.

Lea was very curious. Curious did not equal brave and she was incredibly not interested in venturing out. Lizzy went out and jumped around in it when it was only about 2 inches or so. She learned a lesson in the last snow storm that deep snow equals kitties falling into holes and getting stuck, so now she knows better.

Snow always provides a nice break from the buzz and busy-ness of life, so it's nice. But I have to admit, getting storm after storm would not be as nice even for those who love snow (like me!). Also, this was a busy week for me and it looks like none of that will be happening. Already cancelled- Super Bowl Party and most likely the first dinner club meeting tomorrow night. Possibly cancelled- Alaina and I's annual Valentine's Day dinner at the Melting Pot on Tuesday. We'll see if we can get out our neighborhoods with a non 4WD vehicle by then.

1. What is your favorite travel destination spot?
Anywhere that's warm and sunny and has a beach. I'm not a big fan of vacations that require tourist activities, for me vacation has to be doing nothing or I'm just as tired when I get home as I was when I left.

2. Cats vs. Dogs.
Both. Seriously. Right now I only have cats because they are lower maintenance and we have a really small house. As soon as we get a bigger place we are getting a dog- probably a Rottie or German Shep.

3. Do you believe in fate?
Somewhat. I do think that some things were meant to happen but at the same time, I think it's dangerous to discount free will completely. I've just seen too many times that making one bad decision completely altered someone's life in a bad way. I can't believe that they were just destined to have that happen.

4. Do you believe in karma?
Definitely. I wish more people did because I think that would inject a lot more kindness into the world.

5. Everyone has a unique laugh. Do you like yours?
I like my real laugh. When I'm truly laughing, not just a half ha ha laugh I have one of those loud full bodied laughs. I laugh with my whole self. Unfortunately, I don't fully laugh all that often.

6. Is love really all you need?
Yes- but to a point. It's been shown time and time again that money will effect love and is at the top of what causes divorces. I think love and enough money to cover basic bills is all you need.

7. What’s your take on the whole 2012 scare?
I'm not sure if I've heard of this, but based on the movie I'm guessing that the world is supposed to end or something? Look, the thing is I live so close to a huge target for terrorists and others that wish our country harm that I worry more about that then anything like the world ending- even then I don't worry that much about it. I think whatever happens is going to happen. You either survive or you don't, and if you don't you get to go to heaven and that's not too shabby.

The fact is the vast majority of people who are afraid of death and worry about things like this constantly are those who don't believe in god or faith is something they question. I'm not telling people what they should and should not think or believe, but that's just a fact.

8. If you won a million dollars and had to give it all away, who would you give it to? (Family and friends not included.)
Half to the ASPCA and half to C.O.P.S.

9. Do you believe in God/religion/the power of prayer?

10. What New Year’s Resolution do you always make but never keep?
To stop biting my nails.

Surprise snow!

The weathercasters were saying as late as Friday morning that we were only going to get a dusting from the Saturday storm. This is less than an hour after the snow started mid morning on Saturday, clearly they were wrong. We ended up with about 4-5inches in our yard. (official measurement at DCA which we are almost next to: 5.2)
